Specifically, what name are you trying to give to the file.  If you use 
a non-BMP unicode char, that might be a reason for a crash.  Initially 
use an all-ascii name such as 'mytest.py'.

What directory are you trying to write to?
Are you sure that you have write permission for that directory?
