Python 2.4 was installed as part of the distro.

And still have the problem reported below.

That could be caused by the same problem that was fixed in QScintilla2 lately. 
Can you check this, Phil? I am observing wrong indentation guides when 
switching font settings on QScintilla1 as well.

Ubuntu - Dapper with the KDE desktop
Python 2.4.3
Qt 3.3.6
PyQt 3.15.1
Qscintilla 1.6
Eric 3.9.1

What am I doing wrong or how do I fix this problem?
