Many years ago some of our branches used volunteers in story times, but as some have \
mentioned, some volunteers were better than others. Within the last 5 or 6 years, our \
library system created a Youth Services Dept. which developed a recruitment and \
training program for story time volunteers. These same training programs are also \
used to train new paid staff to do story times. This program has been a great help to \
all our branches because these volunteers do the entire story time, giving the branch \
staff a break. My branch does story times 3 mornings a week: back-to-back baby (0-23 \
mos.) story time on Tuesdays (limit of 15 children), preschool (2-5 yrs) story time \
on Wednesdays (no limit), and toddler (2-3 yrs) story time on Thursdays (limit of 15 \
children). We are moving to back-to-back toddler story times beginning in December \
because the registration fills so quickly for those. There are 6 non-managerial \
librarians who do most of these story times. I fill in as needed. There is no way we \
could keep up all these story times without a break using the volunteers.

I
would like to know if any of you use volunteers for story time programs and
what your experience has been. I'd also like to know reasons why you have
chosen not to do this.Thanks!
