Story: Seems like more people are getting interested in story hour! Source: Defense \
Department Naval Recruiting District Michigan Commanding Officer Cmdr. Paul Gardner \
reads the classic children's story "The Sailor's Dog" to children at the Detroit \
Public Library's Skillman branch in Michigan on July 21, 2005. Sailors came to the \
library to read stories to local children and their families as a part of the "Navy \
Day" festivities in Detroit. The Defense Department invites people to send an \
electronic postcard of this event. I realize that some people may be bothered by this \
photo, but I think we should be celebrating any group that helps literacy along with \
read alouds.. http://lisnews.com/article.pl?sid=05/07/28/2215217

Story: Here's One from The West County Times, an "At The Library Column" by Julie \
Winkelstein. She covers an the old favorite LISNews topic of unattended children and \
public libraries: Articles and books have been written about it, online discussion \
forums toss it back and forth, and I have read some heated remarks on both sides. Or \
maybe I should say all sides, since there are many views and no one solution. She \
points out Adding a young child, who may be bored or hungry or tired, can be \
overwhelming, no matter how much the librarian might want to help. Their behavior can \
be disruptive to other library users, who certainly have a right to expect to be able \
to use their library in peace. lisnews@gmail.com, lisnews1 will get you in.. \

charging for movies, joining Clermont County's system in considering an option \
permitted under a new state law. "Obviously, as librarians we feel things should be \
free as long as possible," said Kim Fender, executive director of the Public Library \

Story: Anonymous Patron writes "The Dallas Morning News looks inside the Dallas \
Central Library's newest exhibit. "Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi \
Book Burnings," focuses on the efforts of Nazi Germany to eliminate materials \
considered "un-German." Its significance struck Ms. Rodriguez, the library's \
multicultural services coordinator, not only because she is a librarian and an \
advocate of free knowledge. But also because she was raised in communist Cuba and \
knows about government censorship firsthand.". \

[AKLA list] Kudos To Kate Shugak This weekend, I just finished reading Dana \
Stabenow's most recent Kate Shugak mystery: A Taint in the Blood. I really enjoy this \
series, but especially when it is set in Anchorage and when Kate ends up at Loussac \
Library doing research. In this book, Kate goes to Loussac twice. Each time, she \
parks in the first row by the fountain, but all the way at the end so she can find \
her Subaru Forester when she comes out of the library. Kate uses the microfilm of the \
Anchorage Daily News to search for details about a murder that took place thirty \
years ago. Later on, Kate learns some new information from a witness . \
