If this is easily reproducible, could you configure proftpd to use file
logging (as opposed to syslog-based logging), via the following directives
in your proftpd.conf:

  TraceLog /path/to/proftpd-trace.log
  Trace DEFAULT:20

  SystemLog /path/to/proftpd-trace.log
  DebugLevel 10

This will tell proftpd to log both "normal" messages as well as trace
messages to the same file, and to not filter those messages. (Note that
that will generate a very large proftpd-trace.log file; hopefully that
large amount of data will contain more hints as to what might be
happening.)

Hope this helps,
TJ
