Would you mind opening a bug report on this anyway, at:

  http://bugs.proftpd.org/

And include the logs excerpts, tcpdump, etc showing the symptoms?  It may
not be worth fixing for a while, but it will still be a Good Thing to have
it in the project bug database as a reminder, should anyone else encounter
this in the future.
