It is mounted via automount.  However, I have just stopped automount, then mounted it \
manually.  Same behaviour happens, ftp crashes after ls <invalid name>, then ls \
<valid name>

Is the directory of the user mounted via NFS already at the time of login,
or are you relying on some sort of automounting mechanism?
