OK. I think I know why this might be happening.  For LIST output, the mod_ls
module has an outputfiles() function, which handles sorting of the list of
files.  This sorting is done all at once, when the entire list of files has
been built up. Obviously if that list is rather long, the sorting will take a
little while.  If indeed this is the case, the solution will be to sort the
files as they're added to the list, rather than after the fact, if possible. 
I'm not sure when I'll have time to get to this, though.
