Horst,
At the time we did the first integration, those functions did not 
exist. :)
Even now buffer is still a work in progress. We are going to do the 
final integration when we have a GEOS cut which is Suitable for Public 
Viewing. IE, when the memory management bug is fixed, when the 
namespaces are in.
