 I know this ticket is really old, but I'm still having this problem using
 XMPP (Pidgin v2.12.0, libpurple 2.12.0, on Arch Linux).

 None of the noted workarounds help me.

 * "Hide New IM Conversations" is set to "Always".
 * "Show Custom Smileys" is switched off.
 * "Raise conversation window" in "Message Notification" plugin is switched
 off.
 * "psychic mode" plugin is not enabled.
 * The message, that causes the chat window to open, does not contain any
 smileys.

 Does anyone have another hint how to work around this? It's really
 annoying!
