Well, normalisation is only really common sense. Even if you'd never heard
of it before, you'd probably think it up on your own in a quest to bring
order to the database madness you'd created without it. :) It's just the all
the jargon that confuses things. The basic idea is just to not store any
duplicate information wherever possible and to seperate out data into
unique, linked tables.

I spotted a new WebMonkey article the other day that explains it fairly well
(even it does go on to implement the example in ASP):
