This is apparently failing:
perl -e '$a = "a" x 300000; print "not " unless "ba$a=" =~ /a$a=/; print "ok 81\n"'
Does it fail in isolation? If so, I'd suspect a compiler/optimiser problem;
if not, perhaps it is a malloc problem.
