Just to follow up on this, I've now tested with Perl 5.8.0 and Perl 5.8.4, 
and I am able to do SASL/GSSAPI binds to the directory server using 
Net::LDAP with Authen::SASL & Authen::SASL::Cyrus.

perl5.8.0 was tested on RH 3

perl5.8.4 was tested on Debian Sarge
