I have now got a confirmation of the bug on the libffi list,
the fix is forthcoming after the turn of the year.

So the interpretation of the ABI is confirmed to be consistent between
libffi and pcc and also with
 http://www.sco.com/developers/devspecs/abi386-4.pdf
which is the ABI backed by linuxfoundation.org for interoperability
on Linux.
