Here's a problem with -k and -xtemps on i386 and ELF.  I don't  
understand the magic in prtprolog() to fix it.

$ pcc -fpic -O -S lp.c
lp.c, line 3: compiler error: prtprolog pic error

void func(void)
{
         for (;;) { }
}
