Subject: [EXTERNAL] [patchmanagement] Registry cleaners

Larry,

+1 on what Mike has said for his unique situation, all of our situations are unique, \
however. He also said emphatically, you've got to know what you're doing in the \
Registry, if one is to clean it up. I am sure any of use who feel comfortable enough \
to do that have our own special way to approach it BUT, BUT BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP \
.... including backing up the Registry itself.

In CCleaner(formally known as Crap Cleaner), one has check boxes as well as a \
vertical tab bar. I just UNCHECK all of the Registry check boxes, then if I make a \
mistake on the tab, nothing happens. One even needs to be careful one what one is \
checking off for deletion too.

I use a combination of solutions to deal with similarities to what Mike spoke of. \
Revo Uninstaller PRO(one time charge), Tweakings.com, Registry Backup(free, scheduled \
at a minimum once a day), Nirsoft's Registry Scanner in conjunction with MS Regedit \
.... There are probably other that I may adopt in the future.

Note: MS Restore Points do not work with Multiple OS Partitions thus the Tweakings \
solution.

Hope this add something and HELPS!!! [Emoji]

Best Regards,

Crysta

PhotM

I use CCleaner on a daily basis, but I mainly use it to scan. The one feature that it \
scans for is registry entries where the target is no longer there – so it always \
finds entries related to Silverlight and .net framework.

If you are dealing with a mangled antivirus uninstall then it can be useful if no \
other uninstaller is available. You can use it to learn how these programs put a lot \
of entries into the core context sensitive menus and then selectively remove those \
specific entries. Remember sysdiff anyone? It also shows traces of orphaned virus \
locations after an infection.

So far we have never had an issue running it, but we never expect it to be a magic \
bullet.

The other parts of CCleaner are also good for clearing up disk space on servers – \
especially on SBS boxes where you have multiple IIS log files which can go crazy and \
you can clear them all with a few clicks. Again, you can lock the tool down to only \
give you selective access to specific log/temp locations to clear and only those \
files over 24 hours old. Always a useful tool before a P2V migration.

So a useful tool if you know what you are doing, it's great for getting a feel for \
the state of a machine, but is not a quick fix – and always have a good backup \
first.

Mike

I'm convinced not to use a registry cleaner; but, I'm a bit confused because some \
have suggested ccCleaner for other purposes. One person even said the registry \
cleaner functionality could be turned off.
