WMI

We use a tool to access ODBC/SQL/MySQL database .

windows provides an API of objects named WMI (Windows Management
Instrumentation) that can be used to manage hardware devices such as network
cards.

We use a class to provides a simplified API to use WMI objects and manage
hardware on Windows system from PHP. Storing the data into a database, and
using PHP to view the data.

James,

That is awesome that your able to develop such an outstanding valuable
application. The majority if us do not either gave the time nor the
knowledge to create such an fine internal application.

In closing that is really great and I would love to see more of how you did
this offline. :)

Why not use WMI? It's free and you can create custom solutions based on your
needs. I built a web server application that uses WMI to query remote
systems, and insert data into an ODBC database, or send email alerts. I also
create custom reports based on the data collected using the same web server.
I have a couple of methods which query Win32_QuickFixEngineering to collect
hotfix information. I can collect all hotfix info and insert into a database
for a list of machines, or find which machines have, or do not have a
hotfix. I have defined many different WMI methods for monitoring process,
services, USB activity etc.

LANDesk, OpsManager to name a few, both are expensive, not sure if you're
looking for freebies...
