As an FYI, I have updated VBSHF to accurately check for the latest DirectX
patch on XP boxes - - - For some reason, this particular patch isn't
advertising itself via WMI, so my usual methods didn't work. Yay Microsoft!

It is free, so you could download it from my link below and scan your
network without paying me anything. :)

If you need help, let me know.

With SUS, you only have to download each patch once over a slow link. With
AutoUpdate, you have to download each patch multiple times. SUS also can
download the patches in the middle of the night when the line is idle.

Q1: Maybe, since you can force users to install the patches via policy.
Q2: Depends, what's your risk if you're vulnerable?
Q3: No, but if it's something people would find useful I'll write one.

Subject: SUS reliability and need to test.

A couple of questions for the group.

We have SUS available at the University, if I want to use it. I haven't yet,
but it appears that the deployment to the client is identical to enforcing
AutoUpdates in an Active Directory domain.

I understand the advantage to SUS to be that an administrator can control
which patches get installed on which machines, as opposed to AutoUpdate
which simply deploys all patches. Is there any other reason to use SUS?

Question 1: In other words, will SUS deploy patches any more reliably than
AutoUpdate?

I find that when I use AutoUpdate I have to scan each PC to insure that the
patch is actually installed. Often I find I need to repatch.

The University makes SUS available, but in most cases no one checks that the
patch actually was installed.

Question 2: Is it acceptable not to check that patches were installed if SUS
is used to do the installation?

Question 3: does anyone know of a freeware tool to test for the directx
patch issued this month?

Thanks,
Jerry
