In case anyone on this list is interested I solved my problem in building 
on the Altix by
switching to the intel compilers. It seems the strange error I was getting 
was due to the binutils
package being a wrong version or some such thing. Instead of monkeying 
around with gnu
compilers and utilities I thought I would grasp at the easy straw and try 
icc instead of gcc.
Not a very satisfying result but one I can live with for now until I have a 
chance to go back and
figure out what happened. Today I test.
