Hello,
if you are using pam_smb 1.1.6, the "pamsmbd is not running" message should
not appear. As far as I know pamsmbd is implemented in development version
1.9.x and CVS tree. Are you sure, that it is same pam_smb version on both
solaris 7 and 8?
"pamsmbd" is used for UNIX/Windows user mapping.
regards,
Volker

OK, I've made some progress, but now I'm lost again. Here's the thing --
this particular machine (a Sun Ultra 60, in case it matters) is actually
dual-booting Solaris 8 and Solaris 7. SSH and pam_smb work quite happily
under the Solaris 8 install. Fantastic. Wonderful.
The strange thing is, they don't work under the Solaris 7 install. I'm
using the exact same configuration files, and the user I'm trying to log
in as does indeed exist in the /etc/passwd file (with a * password), but
it still doesn't work.
Here's the relevant entries in /var/log/authlog:
sshd[301]: pam_authenticate: error Authentication failed
sshd[301]: No Local authentication done, relying on other modules for
password file entry.
sshd[301]: pamsmbd is not running, no authentication possible
sshd[301]: pamsmbd is not running, no authentication possible
sshd[301]: pam_smb: got back 2 username fish
sshd[301]: pam_authenticate: error Can not retrieve authentication info
sshd[301]: Failed password for fish from [wherever]
sshd[301]: Connection closed by [wherever]
Well, sure enough, no service called pamsmbd is running -- but then, it
isn't running on the Solaris 8 machine, either, and that authenticates
just fine. In fact, /usr/local/sbin/pamsmbd simply does not exist on the
Solaris 8 machine.
When I attempt to manually start pamsmbd, I get:
tdb_open failed: No such file or directory
What is it looking for? Where should it be?
Fish.
many thanks
