Thank you Steve for the answer.

I did already a closer look at /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.config and
studied the possible entries and their settings. No idea
(however, I use the factory settings).

Starting X with startx (after having logged in via console)
does work for a normal user. Problems occur (see below) when
the graphical login is used.
