I used to live in Aruba, much smaller island, and the salt in the air really
did a number on equipment that wasn't operated in A/C environment.

oh and usually to understand the humidity/salt/temperature conditions in
some of the Pacific Islands, try to imagine that all your equipment is in a
life guard shed on the beach of Malibu.

If HT has a fiber route that's diverse of Wavecom and Oceanic, then there
might be an opportunity to swap fibers such that it is possible. Of course,
that presumes they have connectivity at the far end of the circuit, too, and
from my experience, there could be one business or technical factor that
precludes them from doing so that's just not obvious to those on the
outside.

Hawaii is unique in geography and business. Also, there're only 1.2 million
people in the entire state.

Except for Oahu, it's mostly rural with brutal environmental conditions.
The two wettest spots in the world are here as well as some of the driest
places in the world. Additionally, the wind is constantly high.

So, yeah from the outside it is hard to figure this place out... ;-)

How did they route around the problem?
---------------------------------------------

They probably bought temp service from another provider, such as Hawaiian
Telcom or Wavecom. Hawaiian Telcom has interisland microwave backup in case
of things like this. I don't think Oceanic does, but I am not positive on
that.

SONET would be ideal. =)
---------------------------------------------

The problem is laying diverse undersea fiber and still have an expectation
of a ROI. That is crazy expensive to lay and maintain. It's all a mix of
WDM and SONET transport.

It looks like both Wavecom and Oceanic were down and they have an agreement
of some sort with HT in the case of situations like these. So, it's all
going over HT's fiber at this time.

I'm going to miss all the excitement now that I don't work for Hawaiian
Telcom any more. I start a new position on Kauai at the PMRF
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Missile_Range_Facility) Monday.. ;-)
