We'll, I've pretty much determined it must be my initrd - *not* the 
zImage.  After flashing back to my old 3.3.5 to test the correct 
workings of the touchscreen, I decided to just flash the zImage of my 
new build.  Worked fine.

Basically I've proved what I wanted in that my selection of source files 
and such will build a working kernel.

So "never mind" on my request for info.  Looks like one or more "cockpit 
errors" in building the opie/libs or something about the desktop.  I'll 
work it out on my own ("what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger...")
