I am definitely not an expert, but aiui when parameters are changed and
the current file (conf) has been altered by ... , an rpmnew file is
generated rather than altering the present admin's wishes (the changed
conf{ig} file.  Then after updating one should check for rpm{new,save}
files and update as they wish. I utilize a diff checker, meld, and alter
the current conf file to my wishes and rem the rpm{new,save} file.

My nsswitch.conf file had never been changed and an rpmnew file *was*
generated but was an exact match. I believe a restart should have been
indicated and the parameters automagically updated. From the traffic this
has generated, seems there are few who completely understood the
situation.

I had several services which stopped working, dict and nfs and ...

I lost nfs between five local boxes and nothing I did would restore it. I
finally changed all to sshfs. Today I cheched and found nfs working
again. Have not decided whether to revert.

good luck.
