This may also be a problem of the graphics driver. What does your 
Xorg.0.log say about display size? The nv driver will ignore 
your panel size specification if it thinks it is wrong. This may happen if 
the driver does not read the EDID information of the monitor correctly.
For me, using the closed-source driver from NVIDIA helped.
