Found it. I had forgotten I changed that file about two years ago, also
because of FF.
/etc/security/limits.conf:
...
#cer needs more, FF starts hundreds of threads.
cer hard nproc 6000
cer soft nproc 4096
root hard nproc 3000
root soft nproc 1850
# 2022-09-28, number of files. With default 1024 I can only open 3 firefox
instances.
cer soft nofile 2048
cer hard nofile 2048
