If you look at "/dev/disk/by-id/" you see that one of the identifications
include the serial number of the disk:

> lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    9 May 30 11:48 ata-ST31000528AS_9VXXXXX ->
> ../../sdd


The command "hdparm -i /dev/sdd" also prints the serial number:

Telcontar:~ # hdparm -i /dev/sdd

/dev/sdd:

 Model=ST31000528AS, FwRev=CC46, SerialNo=9VXXXXX
 Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
...


You should have the serial number printed in the disk paper label.
Whether you can read it without removal of the unit, that's another thing.
