As in Windows, nothing needs to be done to get a barcode reader to work in 
linux. Barcode readers can emulate keyboards, USB and PS/2. (There could be 
issues with some laptops, but those are hardware issues and have nothing to 
do with the O/S running.) Barcode scanners that emulate keyboards don't care 
what O/S is running.

BTW, the barcode readers are not "dump[ing] ascii" into the keyboard buffer.  
They are emulating the keyboard. You can configure some bardcode readers to 
transmit ascii, but that's usually done via RS232.
