to draw a straight line with any paint tool in the GIMP:

 1) click where the line should start
 2) shift-click where the line should end
 
hints:
 -for a more complex shape, make more clicks without releasing the shift key
 -hold CTRL key to limit angles to multiples of 15° (useful for producing 
right angles for example)
