I think i had this problem too in a linux-dom0 and
solaris-domU setup. 

The solution was instead of using an file backend for the
disk, to create a loop device for the image and use the loop
device as a phy:// backend.

$ losetup /dev/loop/0 root.file

disk = ['phy:/dev/loop/0,0,w']
