I have run into the same problem trying to do a Live Upgrade from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9. The system boots and when it reaches the hostname, it will freeze. I am guessing this is when the paths are being setup as that is the next message when booting in Solaris 8.

Has anyone solved this probem?
