Basic answer - because you need a higher layer to provide the
correct information to the switch. When you're at OBP this higher
layer (the fp module) isn't operating.

You might want to try changing the parent=.. bit so that it reads


name="st" parent="/pci@1e,600000/pci@0/pci@8/SUNW,emlxs@0" target=0;


If that doesn't work for you after a reboot, I suggest that you
log a call with Sun and provide a live crash dump for PTS to
analyse. If you're interested in how the internals fit together
