FYI,
I am asking ARC to approve porting of convmv into OpenSolaris.

Regards, Michal Penka

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Hello James,
thank you for fast track guidelines.
I've prepared fast-track document, see attachment.

I talked to i18n community and found Suresh, who will help me to get convm
ARC approval.

Best regards, Michal Penka

       Port convmv to OpenSolaris

 1.2. Name of Document Author/Supplier:
     Author: Michal Penka

 1.3. Date of This Document:
       12/18/2008

1.4. Name of Major Document Customer(s)/Consumer(s):
1.4.1. The Community you expect to review your project:
            I18N consolidation
1.4.2. The ARC(s) you expect to review your project:
            PSARC

 1.5. Email Aliases:

2. Project Summary
 2.1. Project Description
convmv is a perl script providing the tool for converting names of
files from one encoding to another, including whole directories
        recursively.

        More info here: www.j3e.de/linux/convmv/
Project is maintained by Bjoern Jacke.

 2.2. Risks and Assumptions:
     No known risks.

3. Business Summary
 3.1. Problem Area:
convmv is very useful and popular within the GNU/Linux community.
It solves problems with migrating files from one filesystem to
        another.

 3.2. Market/Requester:
convmv is commonly used tool in GNU/Linux world and other operating
systems and is missing in OpenSolaris.

 3.4. Competitive Analysis:
There are other similar tools available, but convmv seems to be used
        mostly.

Indirect competitors are some projects for converting the content
of files. These are for e.g. enconv/enca.

3.6. How will you know when you are done?:
When the convmv is available in OpenSolaris repository,
the project can be marked as done.

4. Technical Description:
 4.1. Details:
convmv is a perl script which has simple CLI interface. It can be
easily installed on the OpenSolaris, Makefile modification needs
to be done though. See RFE link below.

 4.2. Bug/RFE Number(s):
        http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=5776

 4.3. In Scope:
        Converting encoding of filenames.

 4.4. Out of Scope:
convmv doesn't involve functionality of converting an encoding
        of file contents.

 4.5. Interfaces:
convmv provides only a simple CLI interface.

 4.6. Doc Impact:
Man page is included. It is generated by pod2man perl plugin.

 4.7. Admin/Config Impact:
convmv is not configurable and doesn't have impact on any other
        part of system.

 4.9. I18N/L10N Impact:
convmv includes only manpage which doesn't need translation.

 4.10. Packaging & Delivery:
convmv is perl script and it needs only perl to work. Version 5.8,
included by default in OpenSolaris 2008.11, is enough for
        latest convmv.

For building the manpage pod2man (perl plugin) is needed and is
installed by default in OS 2008.11 as well.

It can be used without XServer or any Window manager. It works in
terminal as it has simple-to-use CLI interface - it can be used
        within any installation profile.

 4.11. Security Impact:
There are no convmv's security issues known.

 4.12. Dependencies:
Perl 5.8 or above is required.

5. Reference Documents:
        http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=5776
        http://www.j3e.de/linux/convmv/man/

6. Resources and Schedule:
 6.1. Projected Availability:
It is possible to have it in next OpenSolaris release.

 6.2. Cost of Effort:
It took one week to modify Makefile for OpenSolaris and test convmv.

6.4. Product Approval Committee requested information:
     6.4.1. Consolidation or Component Name:
           SFW
     6.4.7. Target RTI Date/Release:
I believe convmv can be easily ported before 2009.04 release.

 6.5. ARC review type:
        FastTrack
 6.6. ARC Exposure: open
 6.6.1. Rationale: Part of OpenSolaris
