Hi All,

approx. 1 month ago there were several presentations dedicated to localization and \
internationalization of software in the 9th CZOSUG (Czech Open Solaris User Group) \
meeting.

I'd like to share with you some of my points and feelings from this meeting. If you \
have your feedbacks from your local community meetings, please do not hesitate to \
share them with us.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Feedback from CZOSUG meeting
----------------------------
- Approx. 20 people attended the meeting (People were probably more attracted with \
WorldCup match and nice weather than OS.o ;-) as the number of attended people is \
usually 2x more)
- Main topic of the meeting was localization for several OpenSource projects. It was \
quite nice to compare l10n approaches from different projects.

- Agenda was the following:
 * Ubuntu localization process in Czech
 * GNOME localization (Slovak)
 * Internationalization and Localization in OpenSolaris

- People were interested in system called Roseta used by Ubuntu - this system allows \
users-translators to translate the strings via web interface without dealing with any \
specific resource files (po, java properties, ...). Roseta \
(https://launchpad.net/rosetta) is very similar to Sun's ULA project
- People were also interested by SunGloss & StyleGuides - something that is not in \
Ubuntu (and I think in GNOME as well). One question that I was not able to answer \
was, under which licence is (will be) the Glossary content opensourced? Young, any \
idea?

- Czech community lead, Martin Cerveny, defined the following possible areas - \
projects - for improvement (sorted according to severity)
 * Revision of Czech locale data for cs_CZ.ISO8859-1 & cs_CZ.UTF-8(@euro)
 * Revision of Xkbd/Xorg configs, How to input Czech characters and use Czech \
keyboard easily - Input methods and keyboards layouts area
 * Building Czech Glossary (https://g11nportal.sun.com/sungloss)
 * Creation of Czech Style Guide \
(http://developers.sun.com/techtopics/global/technology/translation/using-style-guides.html)

- L10n messages are available for translation but we should also tell people and the \
community what to do (the process how to translate). I think, the best thing we can \
do is to provide the 'tar' file with all languages available in Solaris (not only the \
9 langs that are translated). The languages that are not translated now will contain \
English strings. One build script can built all languages at once.
- Providing some statistics about translation among languages or how many localizable \
strings are available to community is also useful.
- People would be interested by plans for future. [Personaly I read several internal \
emails about some phases connected with i18n and l10n for OpenSolaris - it may be \
good to share this info]
- Couple weeks ago there were a short survey among Czech about possible project \
                participation:
  * 32% would like to translate OS into Czech
  * 23% would like to develop/port OS applications
  * 6% would like to develop/port OS drivers
(I do not know about the rest of 39% ;-) )
