Thank you for your prompt reply.  My error was in specifying the 
SUNWxwplt directory in the pkgadd command, rather than as a package 
below the Product directory.  I greatly appreciate your assistance!

In one of your install CD's (probably the first one), there will be a 
SUNWxwplt subdirectory under the Product directory. 
 
With that CD mounted, pkgadd -d <path_to_cd>/Solaris_10/Product 
SUNWxwplt 
and then reapply any patches that applied to it.

You won't have the Xsun server or any X libraries. Applications like 
Java that can run in both test & graphics mode won't run in even text 
mode if the X libraries aren't present.
