I found this interesting document comparing top and prstat:

http://www.brendangregg.com/DTrace/prstatvstop.html

Summary:
---------------
There are arguments for both approaches. Prstat is very closely in sync with
Solaris, offering fine grained operations, while having a lower CPU load.
Top offers a wide variety of process information, with a wide set of viewing
and sorting modes. Top performance is rarely a common issue today, unless
you are either using very old hardware, or have massively over provisioned
your CPUs. (Best to read it your self, I may have done a bad job
paraphrasing)

Cheers,
Brian
