For the really adventurous... another dev and I have packaged gcc 4.4 
experimental..

http://pkg.osunix.org/gcc/

It's just a tarball you can extract to /opt/
gcc64.tar.gz <http://pkg.osunix.org/gcc/gcc64.tar.gz>  == experimental 64 bit version \
compiled with gnu ld codestr0m-gcc-4.4.tar.bz2 \
<http://pkg.osunix.org/gcc/codestr0m-gcc-4.4.tar.bz2>   == really small c only 32 bit \
version compiled with sun ld.. (so far very bug free)

misc patch that's the other dev's work-in-progress..

If you're on opensolaris you'll need to pull a recent binutils if you want all  the \
latest features,  but otherwise I think  you only need pkg install
sunstudioexpress, SUNWflexlex, SUNWgnu-mpfr, SUNWgnu-mp, SUNWgmake, SUNWxwinc, \
SUNWaudh, SUNWxorg-headers, SUNWgnome-common-devel
