Hi Tom,
You have several options as there are the major projects like KDE 4.x for Solaris project as well as the \
JDS/GNOME project (whom already chimed in).
Both, GNOME 2.30.2 and KDE 4.5.3 are recent major stable releases available to the Solaris/OpenSolaris \
community - well supported. GNOME 2.32.1 is also supported but GNOME 2.30.2 is officially used to stay \
compatible with Solaris 11 Express (b151a).
As Alan mentioned, on x86 you have the Nvidia graphics as the major 2D/3D resource and updates to \
Oracle's Xorg 7.x implementation still continues.
The main thing is making sure you use 'known to work' legacy devices for desktop purposes. Don't go 'off \
the grid' and buy hardware devices without checking the HCL or Sun Support resources/IHV forums. As for \
applications, you have recent compilers like GCC 4.5.2 and Sun Studio 12.2 to port and build what you \
need (or get the assistance here (or elsewhere).
