First a note: You cannot change the behavior of the OS kernel by setting an
environment variable. Environment variables only live in user space.
If such a behavior is ever made configurable on Solaris, this is done by
introducing a kernel variable that may be set by editing /etc/system before a
reboot or by using the debugger.
Your problem is not caused by a bug on Solaris but by a bug the iso image you
use.
Even though it turns out tat the specific bug in your iso image does not cause a
kernel panic, you need to know that the function that did the test is fully
generic and the same deviation from the standard under different constraints
will cause a kernel panic. Hsfs usually does not deny mounting but only
disables a directory that carries a bug. Your problem is that the root
directory was affected.....
