Grub doesn't boot the system without hitting enter on the keyboard.

here is /rpool/boot/grub/menu.lst:

splashimage /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
default 0 
timeout 10

Any idea what could be the problem? I didn't make changes to the /boot/grub/menu.lst it says:

default 1 same problem
default entry before or after the timeout entry same problem
