Thanks, everyone, for the OO recommendations. I do understand it overrides
MS Word and MS Excel. One question: should I dislike OO (God forbid!), can
I uninstall it and return to my MS Word and MS Excel without a problem? Or
will those require a brand new reinstall?

Thanks for all your help.

Hello Dale,

I highly recommend OpenOffice. It is a free download from
www.openoffice.org. You are free to copy it and give it away to your
frineds, family and coworkers. It is free for personal as wel as
commercial use. It will not cost you a dime.

OpenOffice has four main components:
  * Writer is a replacement for Word.
  * Impress is a replacement for PowerPoint.
  * Calc is a replacement for Excel.
  * Draw is a vector-graphics drawing program. MS Office does not have
     any equialent for this.

If you download a free database such as MySQL then OpenOffice can use it
as a backend to give you a replacement for Access.

I strongly suggest you try it. It's free, so you have nothing to lose.
You will find that OpenOffice has most of the features of MS Office, but
each one has some features that the other does not. In my opinion, I
think that OpenOffice is much better. My favourite advantages of
OpenOffice over MS Office (other than the price) are:

  * Smaller files.
  * OO has a drawing program.
  * Superior equation editor (I am a mathematecian).

If you need tech support with OpenOffice that is free also. Just write
ack to this mailing list and we will do our best to help you.

Hope that helps,
Daniel.
