Don't set the size in Common.xml.  As root, do either "vi Common.xml" 
or "kedit Common.xml".  Go to line 128 (section labelled 
"<Substitution>".  You will find that it is using "Andale Sans UI".  
Replace THAT with Times, Times New Roman or any other font you're sure 
works.  Save the file, close the editor, exit user and start OOo again.

That should do the job.
