Hi Chuck:

Out of curiosity, I looked into this by looking at the content.xml 
component of a writer file (e.g. "test.sxw"  You can do this
by decompressing the file using unzip.)

I fully expected to see that the paths were absolute, as that is how
they are shown in ooffice when you right click on an image, and
select Graphics... -> Graphics tab [see the "Link" section].  I thought
a quick little perl script might solve this challenge.

However, a view of the file shows that the image is indeed stored
relative, at least on Linux.  To verify, I moved the test file and
the linked images to another directory, and everything still worked.

Of course, this may be different in Windows, since the drive letter
might be required.  You could unzip the *.sxw file and look at 
"content.xml" to find out.
