I tried to insert the file but the document was
not displayed correctly.

If my guess is right and the problem is that known bug, then either 
a) wait for the next version of OOo which will have it fixed. I don't think
another OOo milestone is too far away now. or
b) If you are building your own version of OOo take the file and version
mentioned previously.

c) Otherwise there is one partial possibility I can think of that might work to
avoid the problem. 

It is crashing because the document properties are read incorrectly, so you
could try "insert->file" document instead of "file->open".  In this case (and
this alone) the msword document properties are not read (so as to not overwrite
the currently opened documents properties). Though this is not an ideal
solution because not all styles will be imported because file->insert will not
clobber preexisting style settings. I'd suggest waiting for the next milestone
and see does the problem go away.
