Sorry Henry, you wrote to Gianluca - but I'd just like to chip in
(that's called "picking up fag ends" in British English).

There are normally 2 reasons for people sticking to Windows, 1: they
like playing Windows-based games or editing home videos or 2: they don't
know what they're missing (stability, being treated as a grown up, not
being talked down to, the beaten-dog syndrome).

There's a third category, people whose organizations lent them the
notebook force them to use Windows, but we'll ignore that one.

If you don't fit into either category, it's worth trying a *new* Linux
distro. If your notebook, like mine, was "especially designed for
Windows XP", it will run no more slowly under Linux than XP; it might
use disk swap a lot more, but it will never disappoint you.

However, lots of things are different from Windows and need some getting
used to. In fact, you can do a lot more with Linux than you can with
Windows. Try and find a Linux friend to help you over the hill. Like
coping with hardware that Linux will as yet only recognize with a little
help (like your ACPI power control BIOS or your Conexant/Lucent
Win/Linmodem).

If you want freedom, a clear conscience, fun (lots of it), stability and
low costs, you'll never yourself want to go back to Windows.

Best,

Tony
