one more note. not everythig is beigh detected as they should.
For instance netapp and some switches that belong to the enterasys
brand.
Also not all windows boxes that have snmp enabled and snmp-informant
installed have been recognized to have snmp.

I have a few questions:

#1: Why are you building an old version of OpenNMS? Don't do that.
Use at least the most recent stable release.

#2: Why are you building from source? Why not use a binary release?
Are
you doing development? If you are doing development, you really don't
want
to be using an old version of OpenNMS--see #1.

So, to answer your question, you don't build OpenNMS with
Eclipse--Eclipse
is an integrated development environment that many of our developers use
as they are editing code. You build OpenNMS with Maven 2.

There is a "building OpenNMS" guide in the wiki:

http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Building_OpenNMS

And there is more development information under the "Development Home"
link on the left-hand side of the wiki.

How did you install?

What version of java?

output of java -version

Always a good idea to provide as many dependencies as possible as
well, my systems are almost 100% Vanilla, but I don't know if yours are.

I use the RPM's on centos 5.3 and prior and never have any issues.
