Jon,

OpenNMS is great! Just bear in mind that VMware will impose some
overhead. This becomes interesting for you if you begin to collect a
lot of data points from your switches / servers / nodes. And/Or if you
have verbose logging turned on in your
$OPENNMS_HOME/etc/log4j.properties file. Please note that you can tune
the log level back from 'debug' to 'info' and further to 'warn'. Each
log-step reduces the amount of data being written to your spindles. In
my case (bare-metal hardware) I'm collecting data on only 500 nodes /
10,000 interfaces, but I saw a pretty good performance impact moving off
of debug mode.

You can also save some performance cycles by not using LinkD if you're
not interested in the information it provides.

I hope you find what you're looking for in OpenNMS. It's a great
product, very flexible and very well written. Post any specific
questions you may have to either this list or the opennms-discuss list
and you're sure to get some helpful insights.

Cheers,
John
