First of, as per the install guide, you have to have the Java SDK,  
not JRE. This is because Tomcat will have to compile files which  
requires the javac compiler that is only available in the SDK.

Second, edit /etc/tomcat4/tomcat4.conf (per the install guide) and  
point JAVA_HOME to your SDK.

Third, to fix the "bad syntax" error, edit /etc/init.d/tomcat4 and  
locate "ps -aux" and change that line to:

tc4run=`ps -ef | grep catalina | grep -v opennms | grep -v grep |  
grep $TOMCAT_USER -c`
