1) make sure the machines you want to monitor are discovered by OpenNMS. This may \
involve setting the IP address ranges via the web interface, and waiting until they \
turn up as visible in the OpenNMS web interface.

2) make sure the machines you want to monitor make the information available to \
OpenNMS. This usually involves checking SNMP settings -- if you're using Net-SNMP \
like most unixes, editing your /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf or /etc/snmp/snmpd.local.conf to \
include lines like

   disk /
   disk /var

and so forth for the file systems you are interested in, then restarting the snmpd \
service is sufficient. If the community string is not 'public', you will need to \
direct OpenNMS to use a different community string.

That's it. If your target IP adress range is huge, it might take a while before \
OpenNMS picks up the change, so this might be a good time for getting a breath of \
fresh air or grabbing a cup of tea or other refreshment. Then check for disk related \
data.
