This occurred to me too while bitbaking opie-image with org.openembedded.dev
branch and the following local.conf

DL_DIR = "/iscsi/openembedded-dev/sources"
BBFILES := "/iscsi/openembedded-dev/org.openembedded.dev/packages/*/*.bb"
BBMASK = ""
PREFERRED_PROVIDERS = "virtual/qte:qte virtual/libqpe:libqpe-opie"
PREFERRED_PROVIDERS += " virtual/libsdl:libsdl-x11"
PREFERRED_PROVIDERS += " virtual/${TARGET_PREFIX}gcc-initial:gcc-cross-initial"
PREFERRED_PROVIDERS += "
virtual/${TARGET_PREFIX}gcc-intermediate:gcc-cross-intermediate"
PREFERRED_PROVIDERS += " virtual/${TARGET_PREFIX}gcc:gcc-cross"
PREFERRED_PROVIDERS += " virtual/${TARGET_PREFIX}g++:gcc-cross"
MACHINE = "qemuarm"
DISTRO = "angstrom-2008.1"
GLIBC_GENERATE_LOCALES = "en_GB.UTF-8 it_IT.UTF-8"
IMAGE_FSTYPES = "jffs2 tar ext2"
PARALLEL_MAKE = "-j 5"
BBINCLUDELOGS = "yes"

I copied the linux-gnueabi-arm-g++-static to the qte/configs dir, and changed
the "ar" related line, the configure phase passed, but it blocked on
libqpe-opie (see bug 4581), after applying a workaround for it, qte-mt-static
compiled succesfull.
